TL;DR

  • I subscribe to a lot of Substacks. Independent writers publishing meaty, perspective-driven content directly to readers – no algorithm, no ad-driven narrative. I prefer it over most traditional content.
  • I started my own – The Cautious Modernizer – to centralize the digital decision-making conversations I’ve been having with clients for 25 years and make them available to every business owner who needs them.
  • The first issue is live now. Read it, decide if it’s for you, and subscribe free if it is.

What Is Substack – and Why I Subscribe to Several

If you’re not familiar with the platform: Substack is where independent writers publish directly to their readers. You subscribe – free or paid – and the content comes straight to your inbox. No algorithm deciding what you see. No ad-driven editorial agenda shaping the angle.

That last part matters. Traditional media – whether it’s a news outlet, a trade publication, or a content-marketing blog – decides what it’s going to cover and what narrative it’s going to push. You consume it and decide whether you align with it after the fact. Independent writers on Substack work differently. You learn from the writer’s perspective, their area of expertise, their point of view. Then you decide whether their lens is one you want.

That’s a fundamentally different relationship with information. And for topics where the quality of what you read affects the decisions you make – I’ll take the independent writer with a clear POV over the content farm every time.

Why I Started This One

For 25 years, I’ve been having specific conversations with clients. Not about website tasks. About decisions. When does it make sense to add a new tool? What does this compliance requirement mean for your business? How do you evaluate a vendor recommendation when you don’t have the technical background to stress-test it?

Those conversations happen with one client at a time. Blog posts on this site cover a lot of ground, but they aren’t always the best place for decision-support conversations. Those conversations often go beyond what a webmaster does and into the territory a Chief Digital Officer or Chief Information Officer would normally handle. Most small to mid-size businesses don’t have either of those. That’s the gap.

The Cautious Modernizer is where I centralize those conversations. Digital decisions, explained plainly, for business owners who are responsible for calls they don’t always have enough information to make well. Free. No sales pitch buried in the third paragraph.

The First Issue Is Live

It’s called “You Don’t Need to Know Everything. You Just Need to Stop Flying Blind.” It covers who The Cautious Modernizer is written for, the specific gap most growing businesses fall into, and what this Substack is going to do about it.

Read it. Decide whether it’s for you. If it is, subscribe – it’s free.
