Should I Update My Current Website or Rebuild It?

TL;DR

  • Try the lightest fix first. Some sites look new again without a full overhaul.
  • Rebuild when the foundation fails, like an abandoned theme or old custom code you can’t edit.
  • Not mobile friendly? That usually means the code needs an overhaul to be responsive.
  • Phases are fine. You can redesign in steps, and the homepage comes last because it links to your other pages.

When an Update Is Enough

If your site works and you can still edit it, start small. On one recent site, a fresh look didn’t take a complete overhaul.

When a Rebuild Makes Sense

  • Your theme is abandoned. The theme is the layout, the look and feel of your site. Without updates from its developer, it can stop working with newer server software.
  • Old custom code blocks you. If you can’t edit your own pages without a developer, the site is working against you.
  • Your site isn’t mobile friendly. See below.

Why Isn’t My Older Website Mobile Friendly?

Older sites were often built for desktop screens only. A modern site is responsive, meaning it works on phones, tablets, and desktops. As Beth tells clients, “A lot more people are viewing websites on mobile or tablets before desktop these days.”

Fixing it usually takes a code overhaul. If parts of your site already work on phones, like the header and footer, we may be able to keep them.

Can I Redesign My Website in Phases?

Yes. Changes can happen in steps or all at once. It’s up to you.

  • The homepage comes last. First we learn what you like about homepages and inner pages. We build the inner pages, then the homepage, because it links to them.
  • Your live site stays safe. We build the new design on a staging site or a hidden page. Nothing changes on your live site until you approve it.

A staging site is a private copy of your website. See What Is a Staging Site, and Do I Need One?

What Webmaster For Hire Recommends

  • Ask about your theme first. Find out if it’s still being updated before you decide.
  • Don’t pay for a rebuild you don’t need. If the foundation is sound, update it.
