TL;DR
- Slow sites can have more than one cause. Big images, heavy plugins, outside scripts, and hosting can all add up.
- Fixing one cause may not be enough. Shrinking images helps, but a slow host can still hold you back.
- A slow dashboard is a different problem from a slow public site.
- We investigate on a private copy, not your live site.
What Makes a WordPress Website Slow?
- Oversized images. On one site, a single photo was 4.5 MB when it should have been about 100 KB. See How to Resize Images Before Uploading Them to Your Website
- Plugins that do too much. All-in-one plugins that add things like social sharing buttons can drag a site down. Beth stopped adding one popular example to sites years ago: “started removing it whenever I see it.”
- Third-party scripts. That’s code loaded from other companies’ servers, like social media buttons, chat windows, or tracking. Each one is another thing your visitor’s browser has to download.
- Hosting. On one older site, shrinking the images and pages helped, but the site still seemed held back by its host. Even the dashboard was slow.
Speed matters beyond patience. In Beth’s words, “That page speed affects SEO and user experience.”
Why Is My WordPress Dashboard So Slow?
The dashboard (the admin area where you log in and edit) can lag even when your public site is fine. As Beth told one client, “I did notice the lag in the admin… It doesn’t seem to be affecting the front-end much.”
- Two editing tools at once. On that site, Beth suspected a block editor add-on running next to a page builder. “But using a block editor while using a builder is not common practice.”
- Database clutter. Old data piles up in your site’s database over time.
- Hosting. A slow host can drag down the dashboard too.
Does Caching Help?
Caching saves ready-made copies of your pages, so they load faster. It helps, but it needs care. Pages that change for each visitor, like a checkout page, have to be left out. After updates, the cache gets cleared so visitors see the current version.
How Webmaster For Hire Speeds Up a Site
- We investigate on a private copy. Quick investigation is fine. Otherwise, a staging copy is necessary to not affect your visitors view of the site.
- We look for overlap, like two tools doing the same job.
- We clean up the database, images, and unused plugins.
- You test before it goes live. “Before I push most of the changes live, I want you to login and see if it’s feeling faster.”
What Webmaster For Hire Recommends
- Resize photos before you upload them.
- Keep plugins lean. See Should I Delete Unused Plugins From My WordPress Site?
- Ask before adding buttons, widgets, or scripts from outside services.
