TL;DR
- Core Web Vitals are Google’s three measures of how a page feels to use: loading, responsiveness, and stability.
- Google’s ranking systems use them, but relevant content still comes first.
- Images are often part of the problem. They can load slowly and push the page around.
- Better scores start with finding the cause, not chasing the number.
What Are Core Web Vitals?
They’re three measurements Google uses to judge the experience of using a page. Here’s what each one means, with Google’s target for a good score:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): loading. How long until the biggest thing on the screen, usually a large image or headline, shows up. Good: within 2.5 seconds.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): responsiveness. How quickly the page reacts when someone taps or clicks. Good: 200 milliseconds or less.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): stability. How much the page jumps around while it loads. Good: 0.1 or less.
Google measures these from real visits, on phones and computers separately, when a page gets enough traffic. See Google’s overview of Web Vitals.
Do Core Web Vitals Affect My SEO?
Yes, but they aren’t everything. Google says “Core Web Vitals are used by our ranking systems.” It also says “Google Search always seeks to show the most relevant content, even if the page experience is sub-par.” See Google’s page on page experience.
Visitors notice too. Reviewing one site, Beth told the client, “Load time shows issues. Looks like there are some image load issues (CLS). Both of those can hurt SEO and user experience.”
What Hurts Core Web Vitals?
- Large images slow down loading. See How to Resize Images Before Uploading Them to Your Website
- Images and other pieces that load late can shove the page around as they appear.
- Heavy plugins and outside scripts make the page slower to respond. See Why Is My WordPress Website So Slow?
Why Is My Speed Score So Low?
Feature-rich sites have more to load. Years ago, Beth compared sites against Google’s speed tests. The one that met the grade on all three was “an HTML site with no special coding. Not a WordPress site loaded with scripting and a database.” A low score points to what’s slowing your pages down. The fix is in the causes, not the number.
What Webmaster For Hire Recommends
- Start with images. They’re a good first place to look.
- Cut what you don’t need. Unused plugins and extra scripts add weight.
- Keep content first. A fast page still needs useful content to rank.
:: Common Questions ::
Can a Webmaster Help Improve My Site Speed and Core Web Vitals?
Yes. We start by asking what you’re seeing and where, since speed tools report different things. Then we find the causes on a private copy of your site and fix them.
Where Can I Check My Scores?
Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool tests any page. Pages with enough traffic also show data from real visits.
