TL;DR
- It can, if the service runs part of your site. Forms, donations, registrations, and email signups often depend on outside services.
- Set up the replacement first, then cancel. That’s how a switch happens without downtime.
- Tell us before you buy or cancel anything. We check what’s connected and vet the replacement.
- Canceling hosting takes your site down, unless the site is moving to a new host.
Which Subscriptions Can Affect My Website?
Many websites lean on outside services, often called third-party services or integrations. If you pay for one, it may be running part of your site:
- Forms and registrations.
- Donations and payments.
- Email newsletter signups.
- Events, webinars, and online courses.
- Premium plugins and page builders. See Do Premium WordPress Plugins Need to Be Renewed Every Year?
- Hosting. As Beth told one client, “If you cancel hosting, the site goes down, unless you’re moving it to a different hosting company.”
What Happens If I Cancel First?
The feature it powers stops working, and the page around it may have to come down. On one switch, Beth laid out the choice: “If I cancel the old plugin first, then I’ll need to remove the donation page.” Buying the new plugin first meant she could switch it over without taking the page down.
What Webmaster For Hire Checks Before a Switch
- What’s actually in use. Automations (tasks that run on their own, like a welcome email after someone signs up) have to be rebuilt in the new service.
- Hidden customization. In Beth’s words, “I will have to look to make sure no customization was done to the existing page, including anything hidden.”
- Whether your data carries over. On one switch, we waited for the new company to confirm that payment records would move over.
- Email settings. A new email marketing service may need your domain verified (a setting that proves you own your web address). When a client switched, we handled that part.
How a Smooth Switch Works
- Tell us what you want to change, and why.
- We vet the replacement and check what’s connected to the old one.
- You buy the new service in your business’s name.
- We set it up and test it.
- Then the old one gets canceled. We can cancel it for you.
What Webmaster For Hire Recommends
- Ask before you cancel. A quick check now beats a broken page later.
- Check with us before you buy. Some companies’ plan pages are confusing.
- Keep accounts in your own name, so you control them. See Who Owns My Website, Files, and Plugin Licenses?
:: Common Questions ::
I Bought the Wrong Plan. Can I Get a Refund?
It depends on the company. When one client bought the wrong plan, we contacted the company and asked for a refund on their behalf. You can also check the company’s terms of use or terms of service page.
Does Switching Services Cost Extra?
Setup and testing take time, so we tell you the hours before we start.
