Why Won’t My WordPress Page Editor Load or Save?

TL;DR

  • Most often, it’s a conflict between your theme, your page builder, or a plugin, often after an update. It’s rarely something you did.
  • Try the quick fixes first: clear your browser’s cache, reload, and try a different browser.
  • Still spinning? Stop and tell us. Don’t keep retrying.
  • Very long pages can get too big for a page builder to handle. We can restructure them.

Why Won’t My WordPress Page Editor Load or Save?

Usually because two parts of your site are fighting. Your theme, your page builder (a drag-and-drop design tool), and your plugins all have to work together in the editor. After an update, one of them can stop playing nice with the others, and the editor spins forever. On one site, Beth found, “It appears there are conflicts with the theme and one of the plugins.”

Less often, the problem is your browser. It may be showing an old saved copy of the editor.

What Should I Try First?

  1. Save any text you typed somewhere else, like a document, so you don’t lose it.
  2. Clear your browser’s cache and reload the page. As Beth told one client, “clear cache first to make sure you have a fresh browser view.”
  3. Try a different browser. If it works there, the problem is your usual browser, not your site.
  4. Still stuck? Stop and send it to us. Tell us which page, which browser, and what you were doing.

When it’s a real conflict, Beth’s advice is to step away while it’s fixed: “Stay out of the site for now until you hear from me.”

Why Won’t My Page Builder Let Me Add More to a Long Page?

The page has outgrown the builder. Pages with years of entries, like a long list of past results or projects, get heavy. As Beth told one client, “it’s too big for most page builders.”

The fix is to keep the entries but change how they’re stored, and that’s a job for us. We move each entry into a simple form in your dashboard, and the page shows them all through a template. The template goes on the page as a shortcode, which Beth described as “one line on the page behind the scenes.” The page gets lighter, and adding a new entry gets easier.

Why Can’t I Edit Some Content After an Upgrade?

Big upgrades mostly change the dashboard side of your site, not what visitors see. As Beth put it after one major WordPress upgrade, “The upgrade is typically backend issues.” The back end is your dashboard, where you edit.

Your live site usually keeps working while it’s fixed. We take a backup before making any fix. See Why Did My Website Break After a WordPress Update?

Rather Have Us Fix It?

Send us the page, your browser, and a screenshot of what you see. We’ll find the conflict and fix it, with a backup taken first. Fixes like this are handled on your Webmaster Retainer.

What Webmaster For Hire Recommends

  • Clear your cache before anything else.
  • Copy long text into a document before you save big changes.
  • Don’t keep retrying a save that spins.
  • Ask us about long pages before they get too heavy to edit.

:: Common Questions ::

Why Can’t I Preview My Draft Page?

First, check whether visitors are affected. Open your live site in a private browser window. If the site loads, it isn’t down. As Beth explained to one client, “your site isn’t down for visitors.” Then clear your cache and try the preview again. If it still won’t load, send it to us.

Is My Website Broken If the Editor Won’t Load?

Usually not. The editor is part of your dashboard. Your live site can work fine while the editor has a problem.
