TL;DR
- Use self-hosted WordPress for a business website. WordPress.com runs the same software as a hosted service from one company. Self-hosted WordPress runs on hosting you choose.
- Webmaster For Hire builds self-hosted. We don’t put business sites on WordPress.com.
- WordPress.com has limits. Its free plan can’t install plugins, and you work within its plans and rules.
- Self-hosted gives you control. You choose the host, the plugins, and the code, and you can move.
What’s the Difference?
- WordPress.com is a service. It hosts your site and handles the software for you. What you can add depends on your plan. Installing plugins requires a paid WordPress.com plan.
- Self-hosted WordPress is the free WordPress software installed on hosting you choose. You or your webmaster can install the plugins and themes your site needs and change the code, within what your host allows.
Why Webmaster For Hire Builds Self-Hosted
- Control. We can add the plugins, features, and fixes your business needs.
- Compliance. Full access to the code lets us make the changes accessibility and privacy rules call for.
- Freedom to move. You can change hosts or webmasters without rebuilding your site.
As Beth tells clients, “WordPress.com has its limitations.”
Watch for Host-Managed Plans, Too
Some hosts sell “managed WordPress” plans, where the host controls parts of your site. Those plans can limit what an outside webmaster can do. See Do You Host Websites, and Is Hosting Included in My Plan?
What Webmaster For Hire Recommends
- Use self-hosted WordPress for a business website.
- Already have a WordPress.com blog you like? Keep it, and link to it from your main site instead of moving your domain over to it.
