FREQUENTLY ASKEDQUESTIONS

Got a question about working with Webmaster For Hire? Start here.

With 30 years of hands-on web work, we've seen just about every situation a business can run into online.

This page answers common questions about how we work, what's included, and what to expect - whether you need a website built, ongoing support, or someone to take ownership of your digital direction.

Is Webmaster For Hire Right for Me?

Who is Webmaster For Hire a good fit for?

Businesses at different stages need different things. Here’s how our services line up:

  • You need a new website or a redesign – Whether you’re launching a startup for the first time or are an established business that’s outgrown what you have, we design and build WordPress sites that are functional, accessible, and built to grow with you.
  • You have a website and need it maintained – WordPress Support Services handles updates, backups, security monitoring, and hack repair so you don’t have to think about it.
  • You have ongoing website tasks but no one to do them – The Webmaster Retainer lets you email requests and get them done without hiring someone, managing quotes, or learning WordPress yourself.
  • You need consistent blog posts, social media, or Google Business updates – Marketing Tasks Off Your Plate handles the posting so it actually gets done every month.
  • You need someone to own your digital direction – The Digital Oversight Partnership is a fractional Chief Digital Officer arrangement for businesses that need strategic oversight of their web presence, SaaS tools, compliance, and digital workflows – not just task execution.

Most clients start with one service and add others as needs evolve.

Why would someone choose Webmaster For Hire over an agency?

You get direct access to the person leading the work. Beth has been designing websites since 1996 and has been running Webmaster For Hire since 2001. She handles most of the work herself. When a project calls for it, she has a team for overnight tasks and larger projects – but she’s the lead on everything. No account managers. No layers of communication. No handoffs between departments.

Most agencies distribute your project across people who’ve never spoken to you. Here, the person answering your question is the same person doing the work.

When does hiring Webmaster For Hire make more sense than an in-house employee?

Several situations:

  • You don’t have enough consistent work to justify a full-time hire
  • You don’t want the overhead of payroll, benefits, and management
  • You need someone who already knows web design, development, security, compliance, and marketing strategy – not someone you have to train
  • You want to scale up or down month-to-month retainer without an HR process
  • You need to get your work done now, not after a 90-day onboarding period
  • An in-house employee brings you one skill set. Beth brings 25+ years across design, development, and digital strategy – and a team when the workload calls for it.

Can you take over a website that was built by someone else?

Yes. Most clients come with an existing site. We audit what’s there, clean up what needs fixing, secure it, and improve from that foundation. Rebuilding is only on the table when what’s there genuinely can’t be salvaged.

Do you work with businesses that already have a marketing team?

Yes. Webmaster Retainer clients frequently work alongside marketing agencies – we handle the website and technical side while the agency runs campaigns. When their team needs something added to the site, we coordinate directly without slowing anyone down.

Marketing Tasks Off Your Plate is a different situation. That service handles blog posts, social media posting, and Google Business updates directly. If you already have an agency doing that work, you probably don’t need this service.

About Webmaster For Hire

What is Webmaster For Hire?

Webmaster For Hire is a digital agency founded in 2001 by Beth Varian, based in Palm Beach County, Florida. Beth has been designing websites since 1996 – including serving as the first SEO Expert at CBS SportsLine – and has been running W4H ever since. The focus is WordPress websites, ongoing webmaster services, and digital oversight for businesses that need experienced, hands-on web management without hiring full-time staff.

How experienced is Webmaster For Hire?

Beth Varian has been working on the web since 1996. Here’s the short version:

  • Designing websites since 1996
  • First SEO Expert at CBS SportsLine (1999)
  • VP of Web Development at a video streaming company
  • With a team, designed an intranet for global consulting firm Proudfoot Consulting
  • Running Webmaster For Hire since 2001
  • 30 years of hands-on web work

Beth leads every project and handles most of the work herself. When projects call for it, she has a team for overnight tasks and larger workloads – but she’s always the lead.

What does a webmaster actually do?

A webmaster manages the full scope of a website – design, content, updates, security, performance, and integrations. It’s not a dated title. It’s an accurate one. Where designers handle aesthetics and developers handle code, a webmaster handles everything in between – including the things nobody else is watching.

For businesses that need more than website management, the Digital Oversight Partnership extends that role into a fractional Chief Digital Officer arrangement – overseeing not just the website but the full scope of a business’s digital systems, SaaS tools, compliance, and workflows.

Are you an agency or a one-person operation?

Webmaster For Hire is a digital agency. Beth leads every project, does most of the work herself, and is your direct point of contact. When a project requires additional capacity – overnight work, larger builds, or specialized tasks – she has a team that works under her direction.

You’re never handed off to someone you haven’t spoken to. But you’re also not limited to one person’s bandwidth.

Website Design & Development

How long does it take to build a website?

Typical timelines:

  • Template-based sites: 6-8 weeks
  • Custom design sites: 8-12 weeks
  • eCommerce or membership sites: 10-14 weeks

Timeline depends on design approval turnaround, how quickly you provide content, and project complexity. You’ll get a specific estimate during your consultation.

How much does a website cost?

  • Template-based: Starting at $4,500
  • Custom design: Starting at $5,500
  • eCommerce/revenue-generating sites: Priced based on scope

Annual costs like domain registration ($15-30/year) and SSL are separate. If you’re hosting on our servers, WordPress Support Services is required – and hosting is included in that plan. We review all of this during the consultation so there are no surprises.

Do I own my website when it’s done?

Yes. Full copyright is assigned to you upon final payment. You’re never locked in or dependent on us to make changes.

Will I be able to update my own site?

Yes. We build our sites for that, unless you request a static site. We build typically in WordPress. In it, you can add and edit pages, upload images, write blog posts, and manage basic content without touching code. We provide training and 30 days of post-launch support for bugs, errors, and minor changes within the original project scope. After that, most clients move into a Webmaster Retainer for ongoing work.

Why WordPress and not Wix or Squarespace?

We’ve worked on all of them. Before WordPress, we hand-coded static sites. For CMS, WordPress wins because you own your data, it scales with your business, and you’re never stuck inside a proprietary system. It takes more setup than the drag-and-drop builders, but you’re not trading control for convenience.

WordPress Support Services

What’s included in WordPress Support?

Monthly updates of WordPress core, themes, and plugins. Daily automated cloud backups. Security monitoring and uptime monitoring. 24-hour malware repair and restore upon notification – by either our monitoring systems or you. Hosting is included as an add-on if you need it, but it’s not required. You can stay on your own host.

Basic (standard WordPress sites): $100/month. Annual plan: $90/month ($1,080 billed annually, includes: SSL certificate – $190 value). One-time setup fee: $150.

Advanced (eCommerce, membership, multi-language, or multisite up to 5 domains): $195/month. Annual plan: $185/month ($2,220 billed annually, includes SSL certificate – $190 value). One-time setup fee: $250.

Do I need WordPress support if I’m not changing anything on my site?

Yes. WordPress sites need regular updates to stay secure – regardless of whether you’re actively making changes. Hackers don’t target websites personally. They scan looking for outdated software they can exploit. A site you haven’t touched in six months is exactly what they’re looking for.

What happens if my site gets hacked?

If you’re on a WordPress Support plan, malware repair and restore are included – completed within 24 hours of notification. That applies whether you’re hosting on our servers or your own.

Webmaster Retainer

How does the Webmaster Retainer work?

You give us your requests (via email, text, Zoom meeting). Then we will complete them within 8 business days and notify you when done. If a request needs clarification or approval, we loop back before moving forward. If a request exceeds your plan’s available hours, we tell you before starting additional work.

Plans range from $95/month (1 hour) to $1,500/month (20 hours). No contract is required.

What kinds of tasks can I submit?

Content updates, image changes, new pages, blog posts added to the site (with content you provide), CSS tweaks, coupon codes, video uploads, event calendar additions, and plugin installations. If it involves your website, it’s usually covered.

What’s not included in the Retainer?

Content writing, keyword research, social media posting, Google Business Profile updates, custom development, website redesign, malware repair, ADA compliance updates, hosting, SSL, and premium plugin costs. Content creation and marketing tasks are handled through our Marketing Tasks Off Your Plate service. Malware repair and security are covered under WordPress Support Services.

Do unused hours roll over?

No. Time expires at the end of each 30-day billing cycle and they are non-refundable. The retainer is designed for clients with consistent, ongoing needs – not as a bank for future projects.

Digital Oversight Partnership

What is the Digital Oversight Partnership?

It’s a fractional Chief Digital Officer arrangement – ongoing executive-level oversight of your website and digital systems. One monthly meeting to review direction and priorities. Up to 20 hours of oversight work per month, capped. Proactive management, not reactive fixes. Work happens without you needing to approve every step.

Clients can also add a Webmaster Retainer plan for hands-on implementation of what the oversight identifies. Direction and execution handled together.

Starting at $5,000/month. 1-year contract. Limited to set number of active partnerships.

Who is the Digital Oversight Partnership for?

Established businesses that have outgrown “just call the webmaster” but don’t need – or can’t justify – a full-time internal executive. Owners who want their digital systems proactively managed, not reported on after something breaks.

What’s the difference between the Digital Oversight Partnership and the Webmaster Services?

The short version:

Webmaster Services: You assign tasks. We execute them.

Digital Oversight Partnership: We decide what needs to happen and delegate execution – without waiting for you to direct the work.

Different levels of involvement. Different client profile. Many businesses benefit from both – Digital Oversight for strategic direction and the Webmaster service for implementation.

How do I apply for the Digital Oversight Partnership?

There’s an application on the Digital Oversight Partnership page. Submissions are reviewed for fit. If there’s alignment, the next step is a brief conversation – not a sales call.

Marketing Tasks Off Your Plate

General Questions

Do you require contracts?

Not for WordPress Support, Webmaster Retainer, or Marketing Tasks Off Your Plate services. Those are all month-to-month. You can change or cancel your plan anytime.

The Digital Oversight Partnership requires a 1-year contract that auto-renews at the end of the term. Website design projects have a project agreement tied to the scope of work, not an ongoing contract.

Do you work with businesses outside of Florida?

Yes. Everything is remote. Our clients are national and international.

How do I get started with Webmaster For Hire?

For most services, the first step is a consultation – usually 30 to 45 minutes. We want to understand your business before recommending anything. Schedule one at https://webmasterforhire.us/request-a-consultation/

How do clients communicate with you?

All clients get Beth’s personal mobile number. You can reach us by email, text, WhatsApp, or phone. We recommend avoiding social media direct messaging – messages there can get buried and missed.
