# What Happens When a WordPress Plugin or Theme Is Abandoned?

## TL;DR

- **Abandoned means no more updates.** No security fixes, and no fixes for newer WordPress or PHP.
- **Your site doesn't break overnight.** It starts breaking as necessary updates roll out.
- **Abandoned plugins get replaced.** An abandoned theme usually means a redesign that keeps your content.
- **Don't buy a replacement yet.** We vet it first, then send you the link.

## What Does "Abandoned" Mean?

The developer stopped updating it, or it was pulled from the place it's sold or downloaded. Our support plan page calls these deprecated plugins. As Beth explained to one client, it's "no longer supported by the developers that created it. This means there will be no more updates to it and creates potential security issues."

## Why Is an Abandoned Plugin or Theme a Risk?

- **Security holes stay open.** As Beth warned one client, "these plugins are no longer going to give you security updates."
- **Your site slowly breaks.** "Your site is starting to break with new updates that are necessary."
- **Server upgrades get blocked.** See [Why Does My Website's PHP Version Need Upgrading?](/knowledge-base/wordpress-care-and-maintenance/php-version-upgrade/)
- **It can put your hosting at risk.** After one theme was pulled from its marketplace, Beth told the client, "This leaves the hosting unsecure. So, I have to move on faster than expected."

## What Happens When a Plugin Is Abandoned?

It gets replaced. In Beth's words, "you should replace them ASAP to avoid security breaches." Here's how a replacement works:

1. **We find and vet a replacement.** We may send a short video explaining the change.
2. **You wait for our link.** We send it once the replacement checks out.
3. **You buy it in your own account** and send us the login.
4. **We set it up before the old one comes off,** so the switch can happen without downtime.
5. **We can cancel the old subscription** for you.

Replacing deprecated plugins isn't part of our support plans. We recommend a replacement and give you an estimate first.

## What Happens When a Theme Is Abandoned?

- **We check with the developer first,** and keep watching for an update.
- **If no update comes,** you need a new theme. That's usually a redesign that keeps your content. See [Can I Change My WordPress Theme Without Rebuilding My Site?](/knowledge-base/wordpress-care-and-maintenance/change-wordpress-theme-without-rebuilding/)
- **If it's urgent,** a simple one-page site can replace the old one while the new site is built. See [Is a One-Page Website Enough for My Business?](/knowledge-base/planning-a-new-website-or-redesign/one-page-website-enough/)

## What Webmaster For Hire Recommends

- **Replace abandoned plugins quickly.** Every month on old code is another month of open holes.
- **Wait for our link** before buying a replacement.
- **Plan for the cost.** Replacement plugins and their setup are billed separately from support plans.

## :: Common Questions ::

### Should I Cancel the Old Plugin Before Buying the Replacement?

That's up to you. Canceling first can mean taking that feature down until the replacement is ready. Buying the replacement first lets us switch without a gap.

### How Do I Know If a Plugin on My Site Is Abandoned?

Our security monitoring can flag them. When it does, we pass the warning along in plain words and tell you what we recommend.
