# How Do I Add or Change a Link on My Website?

## TL;DR

- **To add a link,** select the words or button, click the link icon, and paste the address or search for your page.
- **To change or remove one,** click the linked words or button, then edit the address or click unlink.
- **Links to other websites should open in a new tab,** so visitors don't lose your site.
- **Links in your header, footer, or menu live elsewhere,** and a few are built into your theme's code.
- **Rather not do it yourself?** Tell us the page, the words or button, and the new address.

## Where Do Links Live on My Website?

- **Text on a page or post.** Linked words inside your content.
- **Buttons.** Like "Book Now" or "Learn More" on a page.
- **Images and banners.** A clickable image is linked the same way as a button.
- **Your menu.** See [How Do I Add a Page to My Website Menu?](/knowledge-base/updating-your-website/add-page-to-website-menu/)
- **Your header and footer.** These live in your theme's settings or, if your site uses a page builder (a drag-and-drop design tool), in a header or footer template in its theme builder.

## How Do I Add a Link to Text?

1. **Edit the page or post** in your WordPress dashboard.
2. **Select the words** you want to link.
3. **Click the link icon** in the toolbar. On most computers, Ctrl+K does the same thing (Cmd+K on a Mac).
4. **Paste the full address,** starting with https://. To link to one of your own pages, type part of its name and pick it from the list.
5. **Turn on "Open in new tab"** if the link goes to another website.
6. **Save your changes,** then click the link on the live page to test it.

## How Do I Change or Remove a Link?

- **Linked words:** click them, then click the edit (pencil) icon to change the address, or the unlink icon to remove the link.
- **A button:** click the button, then change the address in its link field.
- **A page builder element:** click the button or image, then find the Link field in its settings panel.
- **The header or footer:** open your theme's settings or your theme builder's header or footer template, and change it there.

Save, then test the link on the live page. If you still see the old link, clear your browser's cache.

## Should Links Open in a New Tab?

Links to other websites should. Links to your own pages shouldn't. As Beth told one client, "Just tick the box that says 'open in new tab' so that it doesn't replace your website in the browser." This allows visitors to keep your site open in one tab while exploring the content on the external site that you linked to.

That goes for payment pages on another company's site too. On one site, Beth noted, "I also made the Payment button open in a new tab, since it's off-site."

## Why Can't I Find Where to Change This Link?

Some links, sometimes in the header, are hard-coded. That means they're written into your theme's code, not stored on a page or in a setting.

## Rather Have Us Do It?

Many sites repeat the same button on several pages. As Beth asked one client, "There are Learn More buttons all over the website. Which ones do you want changed?" So send us:

- **The page** the link is on.
- **The button label or the linked words.**
- **The full new address,** starting with https://.

We'll make the change in accordance with your [Webmaster Retainer](https://webmasterforhire.us/website-services/webmaster-services-monthly-retainer/) plan. ## What Webmaster For Hire Recommends

- **Use the full address,** including https://.
- **Click the link on the live page** after it changes, to make sure it goes where you expect.
- **Open off-site links in a new tab.**
